India 'helped win Gandhi auction'
India says it helped a businessman buy belongings of Mahatma Gandhi at a controversial auction in New York.
Delhi said its culture and external affairs ministry worked with Vijay Mallya to procure the items for India for $1.8m (£1.27m).
The auction went ahead despite protests from Delhi and a last-minute bid by the seller to halt proceedings.
Mr Mallya bought the iconic round glasses, a pocket watch, leather sandals, plate and bowl.
Culture Minister Ambika Soni said that "the government had procured the five personal articles through the services of Mr Mallya".
Ms Soni said the government could not directly take part in the bid because there was a Delhi High Court order against the auction or sale of Mahatma Gandhi's belongings.
The items were "procured through the services of an Indian, Vijay Mallya" and his representative was "in touch with us", she told reporters in Delhi.
"The culture ministry working in close cooperation with the ministry of external affairs succeeded" in getting the Mahatma's memorabilia, Ms Soni said.
Gandhi's great grandson Tushar said on Indian television: "I am delighted, absolutely delighted that Vijay Mallya bought these things and they will now come back to India."
The auction had led to uproar in India, with one minister calling it "gross commercialisation".
The seller, James Otis, a California-based collector, had said he wanted to raise money to promote pacifism.
He had earlier said he would withdraw the items from the auction and donate them to India if the Indian government allocated 5% of its budgetary spending for the poor. India rejected his conditions.
Gandhi said his spectacles gave him "the vision to free India". The watch was given to him by Indira Gandhi. The plate and the bowl were the ones from which he took his last meal before he was murdered, Tushar Gandhi said.
"The sandals he made with his own hands," Mr Gandhi said.
Mahatma Gandhi is widely revered in India as the leader of the independence movement against British rule.

THE wire-rimmed spectacles, pocket watch and other personal possessions of India's greatest independence leader, Mohandas Gandhi, have been sold at a controversial New York auction to an Indian industrialist, who says he will donate the items to his country's government.
Vijay Mallya, known as India's Richard Branson, is a flamboyant businessman who owns a beer company, an international airline and a cricket team. He paid $US1.8 million.
"I am a proud Indian. Gandhiji is the father of our nation, the nation that has made me who I am today, so I felt a sense of responsibility," said Mr Mallya, 54, the owner of Kingfisher Airlines and the United Breweries Group.
"This will be my gift to the government of India."
Mr Mallya, who bid by phone, said that
no one from the Government had contacted him about doing so.
About 40 minutes before the auction at Antiquorum Auctioneers began, the vendor, James Otis, told reporters he wanted to withdraw the items.
"I never intended for my actions to cause such controversy and I pray the outcome is positive and one that Gandhi would have approved of," he said.
The Gandhi items were believed to have been legitimately obtained, but both sales pitted auction houses against governments that could ultimately do little more than complain.
Mr Mallya pledged through a representative to return the items to India for public display. But Prabhu Dayal, India's consul general in New York, said there was still a legal matter to be resolved, as a New Delhi court had issued an injunction to block the sale.
But Tushar Gandhi, 49, a great-grandson of Gandhi who heads the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation, said he was happy with the outcome.
"I am very happy now. Now the things will come back to India to where it rightly belongs."
Criticism of the sale had prompted Mr Otis to make an unusual offer on Wednesday. He said he would donate the items to India if the Government agreed to increase spending on the poor or include the items in an exhibition that would travel the world.
On Thursday Anand Sharma, a junior foreign minister, said that those terms would violate India's sovereignty and that Gandhi himself would have rejected them.
