Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by LTTE on May 21, 1991.
In an exclusive interview to NDTV, the LTTE has said that
LTTE 'regrets' Rajiv Gandhi's assassination.
LTTE negotiator Anton Balasingham spoke to NDTV and
termed Rajiv's death "a monumental tragedy".
"As far as that event is concerned I would say it is a great tragedy,
a monumental historical tragedy, for which we deeply regret".
"We call upon the government of India and people of India to be
magnanimous to put the past behind and to approach the ethnic question
in a different perspective," Balasingham said.
As Sri Lanka faces civil war again, LTTE wants India to intervene.
The organization is prepared for a new relationship with India and
expects India to make a positive gesture.
"India has been silent for the last 15 years and adopted a detached role.
Now again there is violence and the possibility of war is emerging,
so she can't keep quiet but she has to face challenges.
"I think we are prepared to build up a new understanding,
a new relationship with the government of India provided
she makes a positive gesture.
"It's up to them because we have already pledged that
we will never to do anything or act anything inimical to the
geopolitical interest of India".
"So there is possibility of India playing a positive active role in bringing
a resolution to this conflict," Anton Balasingham said.
Killing Rajiv Gandhi - Politically, it was a bad decision.
With the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi,
LTTE lost the support and sympathy of the Tamils in India.
The Indian people are scared to be friendly with the Tamils
from Sri Lanka for lack of Integrity and Trustworthiness.
Indians can not take Rajiv's assassination lightly and
act immediately to forget and forgive LTTE.
But this Confession is the Right thing to do for LTTE.
At last, there is a Light at the end of the Tunnel.
Pretty soon, Sri Lanka will become the beautiful,
wonderful, peaceful land on Planet Earth.
The World will taste the authentic tamil food
on the beaches of Sri Lanka.
Very soon, following the Sri Lankan model,
there will be peace in Israel & Palestine too.
